High Fever

Temperature

A fever is the increase of temperature in the body above what is normal; normal temperature varies in each individual from 97 Fahrenheit to 98.6 Fahrenheit, depending on the part of the body. When temperature rises it starts to interfere with body functions and can even produce convulsions when it reaches 105.5 F. If it goes even higher it can cause irreversible brain damage.

A fever is a symptom which indicates there is something wrong inside the body and normally occurs along with headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, body aches, general discomfort and occasionally diarrhea and vomiting. The skin remains hot and dry.

Depending on how the temperature range varies during a period of several days and how much it differs during the day and during the night, the type of infection can be determined. Here are some examples:

*The temperature range in Malaria alternately rises one day and then returns to normal the next.

*In Pneumonia it rises very fast and remains high for several days.

*The temperature range in Rheumatic Fever rises quickly and goes down during two or three days. It remains low during 15 days and rises again to remain high.

*The temperature range in hepatitis rises slightly from 98.6 F to 100.4F and it normally goes down when the person’s eyes turn yellow.

•One must be alert when a high temperature occurs since this indicates there is something wrong in the body.

An infection is the most common reason for this; nevertheless, the most important thing to do is to lower the temperature in the body and never let it rise above 104F.

• If the temperature rises above normal, the person must be undressed. If the temperature does not go down, place a damp cloth on the body keeping the person away from any cold draft that may exist.

• If doing this does not make the temperature go down, the person must be bathed with lukewarm water (not very cold but not hot either). This must be repeated several times, checking that the temperature does not rise above 104F.

• The person must drink a lot of liquids to compensate for their loss, as well as take proteins and amino acids to help restore damaged tissues. Drinking beverages containing sodium and potassium is very advantageous.• A serum can be prepared as follows: In a quart (1 liter) of water mix 1/2 tablespoon salt and 1/2 tablespoon sugar or honey and give this to the sick person frequently.

Warning! A high temperature is a sign of an infection. If a high temperature persists or rises above 104 F, Consult your physician.
